How to get around the city
Metro: Fast and efficient, especially in the South Zone. Lines 1 (blue) and 2 (green) cover neighborhoods such as Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo and downtown. To get on, you need to use a ticket card, sold at the stations themselves, and the cost of transportation is R$7.50.
Bus: Covers the whole city, but may not be the best option due to traffic. The fare is R$4.30. The “RioCard” card is usually used to facilitate payment, and can be found at BRT and Metro stations, but cash is also accepted.
Cabs and Apps: Taxis are reliable, but ride-hailing apps (Uber, 99) are usually quicker and cheaper.
Bicycles: There are several points in the city with bicycle stations. To use them, simply install the “Bike Itaú” app and register. The bike paths along the Copacabana and Ipanema waterfront are a great way to get around! There are monthly plans for R$39.90.
VLT: Ideal for exploring the center and Porto Maravilha. The fare is the same as the bus fare.
BRT: Buses more geared towards the West Zone of the city, they provide access to Barra da Tijuca and the surrounding area. As they have an exclusive lane, traffic is not a problem.
Car rental: A good option for exploring distant areas and neighboring cities.
Extra Tips:
Plan Ahead: Use map apps such as Google Maps or Moovit to plan your route and check traffic in real time.
Be Aware of Traffic: Rio has complicated traffic, especially in tourist areas and at peak times, between 6am and 9am in the morning, and from 4pm to 7pm in the evening. Try to plan your trips outside of the busiest times.
Wear Comfortable Clothes and Shoes: Rio is an ideal city to explore on foot, so wear light, comfortable clothes and a good pair of sneakers to walk the streets and beaches.
